Christmas Cookies and Cake

'Tis the season to bake! I collect recipes all year, just waiting until it's time to bake for the holidays.

Each year I try new recipes, except that I always do make a traditional frosted sugar cookie. The shape and color frosting on the sugar cookies is different each year however.

The criteria for selection is, of course, appearance and taste first and foremost, but I also try to choose cookies that have a decent shelf life and travel well since we send them to friends and relatives far and near.  (Other than the jam thumbprints, all the cookies will last in an airtight container for several days.)

So here are the recipes I chose for this year's cookies, along with my piece de resistance, a beautiful snow-covered cake.  And yes, the recipes all call for real butter, sugar and flour, along with our fresh eggs.  I don't cut corners when it comes to baking. It's the real thing or nothing. Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

And finally, my piece de resistance, a snow-covered vanilla cake.  I added 1 Cup of sour cream to a boxed vanilla cake mix and replaced 2 teaspoons of the water with vanilla extract and baked according to the box instructions.

Merry Christmas!
