I have long been an avid follower of Lauren Scheuer both on Facebook at Scratch and Peck and her Blog, so when I heard she was writing a book, I couldn't have been more excited for her. I have lived the adventures of Lauren's flock and dog Marky vicariously through Facebook and her blog and could not wait to read a full-length book devoted to her chickens!
So when Lauren asked if I would be interested in receiving a copy of her book Once Upon a Flock to review and also to be included in her book blog tour, of course I agreed. Lauren and I kept in touch all last year, and it was so exciting to follow her progress and feel a part of the whole process. She even was so kind as to draw our indoor/outdoor barn kitty, Linus, with our Buff, Grace, as a thank you for being involved in the launch of her book! You all may know them from my Facebook page and blog.
Anyway back to the book. My review copy of Once Upon a Flock arrived several weeks ago, in advance if its 'official' launch this week, and I eagerly devoured it in three sittings. I literally had to put it down and walk away, wanting to savor the story and not rush through it. I only managed to make it last three nights - it was very, very difficult to stop reading.

I had very high hopes for this book and was not disappointed in any way whatsoever. I think I have read every chicken 'memoir' on the market and I can honestly say that Lauren's ranks right up there with my favorites. Not only her tender and affectionate way with her chickens and her skill in describing each of their unique personalities, but her endearing drawings interspersed throughout the book make this, in my opinion, required reading for every chicken keeper.
Not a childrens' book, but certainly a book that children would thoroughly enjoy reading, or having read to them, Lauren has managed to capture the true essence of being a backyard chicken keeper and what that entails. How these small, curious, precious creatures completely and totally capture our hearts and minds, invading our every waking moment at times, is something that Lauren perfectly portrays in Once Upon a Flock.
