A Week in Farm Photos August 25th - 31st

August 31, 2013

This past week went by in a blur. My husband was in California visiting family, so I held down the fort farm by myself. In addition to animal care, and watching our duckling continue to grow like  a weed, I also finished up one last final proof of my book, which will be off to the printer this coming week! Yay!

We had another heat wave this week as well, but since fall is right around the corner, from here on in the temperatures should settle down to something much more comfortable and before we know it, it will be time for flannel pajamas, sweaters, hot tea, a fire in the fireplace and mittens. I can't wait!

A Week in Farm Photos August 18th - 24th

August 24, 2013

We had another heat wave this past week but we take comfort in the knowledge that autumn is just around the corner. Hopefully that will signal an end to all this season's broodiness. It seems that I break one and another hen decides she's ready to become a mom! We finally found a home for our rooster John Quincy, which was bittersweet, but means that there will be no babies here ... at least until next spring! On the duck front, our little duckling is growing like a weed and it has been very entertaining to watch her grow.  We've been harvesting pears and are hoping for a new raspberry crop soon. I hope you enjoy the best of this past week's photos.

Snake in the Duck House! 9 Tips to Help Repel Snakes

August 22, 2013

Snakes are often the bane of the backyard chicken keeper. Lured to the coop area by the promise of an easy meal (eggs, small chicks, ducklings or sometimes bantams as well as the mice drawn to the coop), even non-venomous snakes can pose a real threat. Snakes can squeeze through the tiniest of cracks or smallest of spaces and therefore are very hard to keep out of a run or pen. After our recent run-in with a black rat snake, I revised my snake defenses and wanted to share with you.

A Week in Farm Photos August 11th - 17th

August 17, 2013

This week began with cooler temperatures that were much appreciated by all our animals...and ended with another possible reality tv show offer for us. What do you think? Would America be interested in all the happenings here on our farm? We've already decided against anything cheesy, tacky, drama-filled or trashy - so that pretty much rules out most shows that have been pitched our way!

But I'm confident that eventually the right opportunity will come along ... a cross between Martha Stewart, P. Allen Smith, HGTV, with a little Bob Villa and the Food Network thrown in would be sweet! But in the meantime you'll all have to be content with this little slice of our farm life that I share here each weekend.

A Week in Farm Photos August 4th - 10th

August 10, 2013

We had a little duckling hatch last Sunday.  This week was all about the 'Custard and Ginger Show'.  If you think a baby chick is cute, maybe you just haven't seen enough baby ducklings!

Vanilla Vodka Cherries aka Homemade Adult Shirley Temples

August 6, 2013

It's cherry season! I bought several pounds of cherries at the farmer's market and realized that we wouldn't be able to eat them all, so I started looking for recipes to can some or make pie filling. While browsing Pinterest I stumbled on this 'boozy cherry' recipe and decided to try making some cocktail cherries in syrup to give out as Christmas gifts this year - after all, it's never too early to start thinking about Christmas right? And handmade is always the way to go.

How to Build a Chicken Tractor

August 5, 2013

I am so happy to share this guest post written by Kevin Meyer from The Adventure Bite where he and his wife Dani share life from their backyard homestead where they raise rabbits, ducks and chickens. I've seen dozens of chicken tractors over the years but this is one of the best designs I've seen, plus it's super cute (which is always important!) and Kevin's step-by-step instructions make this an easy weekend project.

Oven-Baked Sweet Potato Garlic Fries - A Healthy Treat For your Chickens

August 4, 2013

Many of you have mentioned how much your chickens love being treated with leftover French fries. Of course, while they aren't the healthiest treat between the frying oil, salt and white potatoes, once in awhile won't kill them, but instead why not try making some super healthy Oven-Baked Sweet Potato Fries for your chickens to enjoy?

A Week in Farm Photos July 28th - August 3rd

August 3, 2013

This past week brought gorgeous cooler days and a bit of rain.  It was critter week here on the farm - in addition to our three dozen assorted critters, I rescued a giant praying mantis and a baby fruit bat, which was kind of neat.  Please enjoy this slice of our life!
