Leaf Rake Christmas Tree - Edible Coop Decor

December 6, 2012

You all know by now that I am always looking for fun, easy crafty ideas, especially those that our chickens can enjoy.  Well, Yvette recently saw a similar rake decorated with buttons and thought we could turn that into some sort of Fresh Eggs Daily craft.  Well, sure we could! Here is our version of the Rake Christmas Tree.

~Supplies Needed~

Green plastic leaf rake
Aluminum foil
Small Apples

Cut the cardboard into a star shape. Punch two holes in the top with a small paper punch and then cover the star with aluminum foil. Use a toothpick to poke through the aluminum foil where the hoes were punched.

Cut a piece of twine to secure the star to the lower part of the rake handle.

Then tie the twine into a pretty bow.

Next tie a piece of twine around the stem of each apple..

and then tie each apple on to the rake spokes, spacing them out.

By this point, the chickens were getting curious about what I was up to.

I sliced up an apple for them to keep them busy so I could finish up.

And here is my Rustic Rake Christmas Tree. Easy AND edible when you're finished displaying it.

(Note: apple seeds contain trace amounts of cyanide, so if you are planning on letting your chickens eat the apples afterwards, you might want to core them first)

For safety's sake, be sure the twine is tied securely to the rake spokes so the chickens can't remove and possibly swallow it. (I supervised this treat to be sure no one swallowed anything they shouldn't.)  When the apples are gone, remove the twine and star and put the rake back in your garage behind the lawn tractor.  Your husband will be none the wiser - unless he follows you on Facebook or your blog of course!

~Thanks to Yvette for the inspiration for this craft~
