Homemade Lemon Sugar Body Scrub

Probably the biggest difference I've noticed between living in Maine and living in Virginia where we moved from, besides the snow and colder temperatures of course, is how much drier the air is.

While I love that our bath towels dry much faster and I can (finally!) try my hand at baking macarons, I have discovered why Southern belles have such gorgeous dewy skin - the moisture in the air is their natural beauty secret.

My naturally dry skin is even drier this winter, but instead of running out to buy expensive products, I whipped up a batch of Lemon Sugar Body Scrub. it was actually faster to make than it would have been to drive to the drugstore to buy something.

And the fact that it's all natural and made from ingredients in your kitchen and pantry should make it your go-to body scrub as well.

Coconut oil by itself is a wonderful skin moisturizer and I was tempted to just slather my body with some right from the jar and be done with it! But I really wanted a shower scrub to use in the morning to prepare my skin for the day ahead, as well as for nighttime before bed.

Lemon is a natural astringent and helps to tighten pores and prevent acne and other skin issues. I love a citrus smell in the shower to wake me up and get my day started on a bright, cheerful note. Lemon juice also helps to bleach sun spots and other skin pigmentation, working to even out your skin tone.

Sugar is great for gentle abrasion of your skin and not only removes dry, dead skin but also cleans pores and removes dirt. It helps improve circulation and prevents signs of aging like wrinkles (which we all can use!)

I chose to give the granulated sugar a few whirls in the food processor to grind it up a bit, but you can skip that step if you want your scrub to be more grainy.

I like to add a little bit of Vitamin E to my scrub as well. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and helps block free radicals caused by chemical pollutants in the air and sun exposure and improve skin's appearance.

It also helps to moisturize the skin. Vitamin E acts as a preservative and will extend the shelf life of your scrub as well.

Homemade Lemon Sugar Body Scrub

3/4 Cup coconut oil
One lemon (juiced and zested)
2 Cups granulated sugar
Healthy drizzle of Vitamin E

Zest the lemon and then squeeze the juice and set aside. Heat the coconut oil in a small saucepan over low heat until it just melts. Meanwhile, combine the sugar and lemon zest in a food processor and pulse several times until combined.

Remove the coconut oil from the heat and stir in the lemon juice and Vitamin E. Add the sugar/zest mixture until combined. You can adjust the amounts to get the consistency you prefer. You want a moist mixture, but not runny necessarily.

Pour your scrub into a mason jar or other covered container and let cool and solidify. Store in the shower and rub all over your body as needed with loofah, bath puff or your fingers. Safe to use on your face as well.

You can also store the scrub in the fridge, just be sure to let it come to room temperature before using. You can scoop out a small cupful each morning to use. Slather on as needed when you shower or give a jar as a gift.

-zest a lemon-
-whirl the zest with some sugar in your food processor-
-halve a fresh lemon and remove the seeds-
-add the juice to melted coconut oil-
